Public toilet refurbishment at bus station
Overview
Working with the architect, Studio Mutt, and the client, West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) , we put together a bus station washroom fit for 2021’s City of Culture.
Although there has been a bus station on the site since 1931, the current building was opened in 1994 and served the people of Coventry for over a quarter of a century. WMCA commissioned the £1.5 million refurbishment project to include the public washrooms, accessible WC’s, baby change facilities and the drivers washroom and rest area.

Working closely with the architect, we achieved a minimalist design utilising water resistant materials to ensure longevity of use. We recommended products out of our standard laminate and stocked sanitaryware and brassware ranges to make the process as easy for the client as possible.
The vanity station design was particularly important to the client with shelves for washbags as a requirement, so we sat down with to understand what the exact needs were, then provided isometric layouts to ensure all parties were clear on the design proposal.

We put forward recommendations for cubicles, vanity units, duct panels, sanitaryware, wash troughs, floor tiles, lighting, and redesigned the mirrors and accent lighting to deliver cost savings and a solution less prone to vandalism.
Trovex S3:60 cubicles with coordinating duct panels and vanity units were selected. Manufactured from solid grade laminate, these units are extremely hard wearing and water resistant and come with our 15 year guarantee on the laminate.
Trovex Smarttroughs, made from antimicrobial Krion solid surface material, were used to minimize standing water and the opportunities for bacterial growth. Paired with DVS mains powered automatic sensor taps, it also reduces the number of touch points in the washroom, increasing user safety and confidence during the Covid-19 pandemic.
We hold stock of Armitage Sanitaryware for use on all our projects as it is a very reliable quality product for the commercial environment, with a five year manufacturer’s warranty.

The washrooms were completed with porcelain anti-slip floor tiles and the black and white wall tiles to create a sleek, contemporary design which harks back to the history of transport, something of particular significance in Coventry.
